3 Steps to Finding Motivation

Finding Motivation

Last Updated on November 16, 2022 by Kayla

By definition, motivation is the reason or desire to act a certain way. First, you must find your why for making said change(s).

1. Identify your WHY

To start with purpose, you must understand why you want to change. The more specific, the better. Questions to ask may include:

  • Why do you want to be healthier?
  • Why do you want to look better in your clothes?
  • Why do you want to be a good role model for your family?

Ask yourself a series of ‘why’s until you have a solid foundation, strong enough to take you through the most difficult of days.

2. Conduct an energy assessment

Whether your goal is to lose weight, be more intentional with exercise, or kick a$$ at work, it’s important to take a step back and ask yourself, “is it realistic to pursue XYZ right now?” Maybe you’re juggling a full-time job, part-time college courses, and weekends chockfull of hockey or basketball tournaments.

Before you add more to your plate, think about adding [insert desired behavior change here] into your daily routine. How achievable is it? What barriers do you anticipate? What might you have to put aside to succeed without overburdening yourself? What exactly needs to change?

3. Set the stage

Set up your environment and systems to foster a motivational environment. Music, for example, is a powerful tool that can help set the mood for change. Want to exercise for 20 minutes a day? Put on your favorite playlist when you wake up or while you’re changing into your workout clothes. Hoping to meditate to reduce stress? Find a meditation playlist you can easily refer to.

Preparing a space or planning how you will approach a new task helps recalibrate your routine to achieve your goal(s).

Whether it’s becoming a healthier version of yourself, building your own business, or spending more time with the ones you love, you’ve just got to start; it’s that simple.
